Dr. Merchant and Carolyn Merchant used broad-spectrum (UV light) fluorescent bulbs in their office fixtures for many years. We cannot confirm the effectiveness against germs, absent a control group, but we had them for the purpose of reducing germs and the UV light gave the offices a pleasant atmosphere. Some patients use these lights in the winter to improve mental health. It seems apparent hospitals, schools, workplaces, and other settings where transmission of pathogens is an issue should have these lights, as a reasonable first step in infection control.
