Important drug for parasitic disease has become prohibitively expensive

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

After his residency, Dr. Merchant worked 5 years in an area where parasitic disease was common, due to contaminated drinking water and contact with animals. He observed that chronic parasitic disease led to other chronic diseases, and that chronic diseases developed in younger patients.   Mebendazole is an anti-parasitic drug, for parasites and worms, which is one of the most under-utilized drugs in medicine. Mebendazole was not used frequently enough, in the U.S.; thus, manufacturers raised the price beyond reason……

Co-infection with bird pathogens may cause coronavirus to evolve

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

From the published genomic analysis, two types of coronavirus are circulating in the population—type S and type L. Type S is the older strain, and the dominant strain of coronavirus in Washington State and on the West Coast. Type L is newer and more transmissible strain; and is the dominant type of coronavirus in Italy, New York City, and Brazil. Researchers have not determined if the strain impacts severity and mortality, but have shown type L induces a higher viral…..

Animals can be a vector for pathogens and parasites causing chronic disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 1 0

New York City has 600K+ dogs and 400K+ cats; and a zoo in Central Park. New York City playgrounds were found contaminated with toxocara (roundworm), which lives in the intestines of dogs and cats, particularly stray animals. Toxacara can infect the liver, lungs, brain, eyes, and central nervous system; and has been linked to a reduced IQ.Metropolitan areas in Brazil have a highly density of pets, including dogs, cats, birds, and monkeys; 50% of elementary school children and 60-80% of…..

When a drug works, ask why it works!

Hydroxychloraquine, a/k/a plaquenil, is an anti-parasitic drug that has been used to treat uncomplicated malaria and for prevention of malaria during travel. Historically, soldiers who took anti-malarial medicines reported improvement in their rheumatoid arthritis and lupus symptoms. Today, hydroxychloroquine is used to treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis; and it is being tested in covid-19.   If hydroxychloraquine successfully treats and/or mitigates symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, we should ask whether rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are caused, in whole or…..

Co-infections increase the risk to the patient

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

We discussed the evolution of pathogens and danger to humans from animal pathogens, in “The Origin of Disease: The War Within”. We discussed the danger of bird pathogens, the possibility of a co-epidemic of psittacosis during the Spanish Flu pandemic, and the danger of co-infections. We discussed the Zika virus, in Brazil, and how scientists searched country-wide for patients with the Zika virus; but failed to test for co-infections common in Brazil, to determine if co-infections increased the risk of…..

Chlamydia infection can cause and trigger chronic disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Adult onset diabetes can be caused by a chlamydia infection, which causes endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and dysbiosis. Chronic chlamydia creates reduced immunity, and a favorable environment for secondary bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Intestinal parasites can cause mechanical obstruction in the pancreas and common bile duct. Chlamydia pathogens and parasites have been found inside tumors in the pancreas, gallbladder, and liver. (H-pylori is an intestinal pathogen known to cause of cancer, which has also been found in pancreatic cancer).   In…..

Diabetes is caused by immortal infection and parasites

Carolyn Merchant Blog 2 0

The pancreas is an endocrine gland, attached to the gastrointestinal tract. The pancreas produces insulin, the hormone which allows the body to use and store glucose; and which signals muscle, fat, and liver cells to absorb glucose, to make energy. When the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin, the patient develops high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and diabetes. Diabetes is considered an endocrine disease because it involves the failure of an endocrine organ, an autoimmune disease because the immune system attacks…..

Intestinal worms can be transmitted from animals and cause human disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 1 0

Today, patients and doctors try to deny the existence of worms, and the role of worms in chronic disease. Hippocrates understood people got intestinal worms, and patients felt better after expelling the worms. Veterinarians know animals get worms, and animals are treated for worms. Veterinarians know pets and animals transmit worms to people; and intestinal worms come in many different pathogenic forms. A live blood morphologist reported to us more than 50% of patients with pets showed evidence of pinworms…..

Toxoplasmosis causes of widespread disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread intracellular animal parasite, and one of the most widespread zoonotic pathogens in the world, infecting one-third of the population. Toxoplasmosis can cause brain and central nervous system disease, lung disease, cancer (including brain cancer), and skin disease; and has been “associated” with Alzheimer’s disease, demyelinating diseases, autoimmune disease, movement disorders, and epilepsy. Toxoplasmosis can cross the placenta to cause microcephaly and other birth defects; development of seizures, in infants; and regressive developmental disorders, in children……

Pathogens and parasites in GI tract can migrate to abdominal organs to become a focus for cancer

Carolyn Merchant Blog 2 0

The pancreas, liver, and gallbladder are connected to the intestinal tract, which allows intestinal pathogens and parasites to migrate to these organs, to evade stomach acid and find new hospitable locations for survival. Chlamydia pathogens and parasites have been found inside tumors in the pancreas, gallbladder, and liver. H-pylori is known to cause stomach cancer, has been “associated” with pancreatic cancer, and has been found inside pancreatic cancer. Gastrointestinal pathogens can migrate to adjacent abdominal organs, and become a focus…..
