Inflammation is a response to an infection–not an independent disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

The medical community believes many chronic diseases are caused by inflammation. But where is that inflammation coming from and why?  Are the immune cells attacking the person’s own cells, or is the immune system mounting an attack against an intracellular pathogen that is difficult to eradicate and has not been diagnosed? The immune system has difficulty fighting intracellular pathogens; and in response to intracellular pathogens and the abnormal proteins generated by the pathogens, the immune system generates a cascade of…..

63% of severe covid19 cases have one of four chronic diseases

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Four chronic diseases account for 63% of severe disease from covid19. Obesity—Diabetes—Hypertension—Heart failure.   The report makes sense based on the underlying intracellular pathogens and parasites that cause each of these four diseases. Intracellular pathogens and debris from these pathogens can cohabit intracellularly with viruses, in endothelium, epithelium and stroma. Intracellular pathogens and parasites can also provide a host for a virus. When a pathogen is inside a cell or parasite it is difficult for the immune system to reach…..

Inflammation is caused by immortal pathogens

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

The November 2019 cover story, in AARP magazine, asked if decreasing chronic inflammation could be the cure for many chronic diseases. We agree with the importance of understanding inflammation in chronic diseases; and the suggestions in the article to reduce inflammation, such as diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. However, we ask, what is causing the inflammation? The cause of chronic inflammation is chronic intracellular infections, and an impaired immune system attacking the infections! The intracellular pathogens are difficult to…..

Endothelial dysfunction and chlamydia pneumonia in chronic disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 1 0

Rajendran, et al, suggested endothelial dysfunction was the “hallmark of human disease”; and that endothelial dysfunction is a marker for the initiation and progression of infectious disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney failure, and cancer. The authors suggested expanding our understanding of endothelial function will lead to targeted therapy for a myriad of chronic diseases; and that a more aggressive approach is warranted, for early detection and treatment of abnormal endothelial function. Chlamydia pneumonia (CP) causes endothelial dysfunction in vascular…..

Inflammation sign of infection

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Redness, heat, swelling and pain are the hallmarks of infection. Inflammation is a sign of infection—not an independent disease. Treating inflammation without identifying the cause of the inflammation has the potential to make the condition worse.

Inflammatory disease

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

The immune system has a variety of types of cells to fight infection, and different types of immune cells may attack different types of pathogens, independently or in sequence.  TNF-alpha is generated by the immune cells to create a higher level of inflammation, to attack chronic infection which is hard to reach with the normal immune response. High TNF-alpha is present in virtually all chronic diseases, which suggests the immune system is attempting to fight a chronic infection.  Inflammation occurs…..
