Autism and maternal infection

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Doctors are beginning to hypothesize infectious causes of autism. In mice, treatment with antibiotics reduced or eliminated autism, in the fetus and in subsequent births. The fact antibiotics prevented autism in mice strongly suggests bacterial pathogens can cause autism, alone or in combination with other co-infections, an imbalance in the microbiome, and genetic weaknesses. Studies of autistic children showed high levels of TNF-alpha in the spinal fluid, and high levels of cytokines in the blood plasma, suggesting immune dysfunction. TNF-alpha…..

C-sections and broad spectrum antibiotics in autism

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Some have argued an increase in autism-spectrum disorders is related to an increase in the rates of C-section surgery. When a patient has a C-section, the patient is in a hospital, in a setting where hospital acquired infections are common. C-section patients are given a course of broad-spectrum antibiotics, IV and orally, to avoid a hospital-acquired infection, arising from the surgery. Researchers have reported a gut-brain connection in autism-spectrum disorders, and autistic children often have co-morbid gastrointestinal disease. C-section babies…..

Fragile X disorders may slow or improve with targeted antibiotic treatment

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Autism spectrum disorders include fragile X disability. Minocycline, an antibiotic used to treat immortal pathogens, was seemingly able to improve behavior and slow fragile X disability. In 2018, a clinical trial, in patients with fragile X, tested minocycline with Lovastatin, as a combined drug regimen. The combination drug regimen was reported to have eased atypical behavior, and improved signaling balance.   The success of minocycline in improving fragile X disability, suggests immortal infectious pathogens play a role. The diagnosis of…..

Acute and chronic infections during pregnancy increase risk of autism

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

In autism patients, studies showed high levels of TNF-alpha in the spinal fluid, and high levels of cytokines in the blood plasma. Autism patients also often have co-morbid immune dysfunction and gastrointestinal dysbiosis. Immortal pathogens cause high TNF-alpha, high levels of cytokines in the blood, immune dysfunction, and gastrointestinal disease. A recent article suggested infection in pregnancy increases the risk of autism and depression in a child. TNF-alpha in the cerebral spinal fluid, a high level of cytokines in the…..
