The FDA relies on the honesty of manufacturers, in approving drugs and devices. The FDA does not conduct any independent studies, and merely reviews the information manufacturers submit to them. The data submitted to the FDA supporting the approval of SSRI drugs for depression was examined by European scientists and by an independent psychiatrist in the United States. They found industry manipulated the data, and the data did not support safety and efficacy. After approval, the FDA and political pressure delayed a black box warning on suicidal ideation and suicides, for years. The FDA continues to protect industry by ignoring requests by advocacy groups to add stronger warnings about violence toward others, homicidal ideation, and homicides. Mass shootings and many other violent acts are not just guns—it is also SSRI drugs. It is easier to get a drug approved, than to remove a dangerous drug from the market or add new warnings.
