We just read “An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back”, by Elisabeth Rosenthal. The book is an eye-opening exposé on the business of medicine, and explains how we ended up with a medical care system that costs $3 trillion dollars a year, in the US. It was truly sickening to read how medicine has devolved into big business, and uncontrolled profit motives have driven up the cost of medical care and treatment beyond the reach of many.
“An American Sickness” is a great companion book to “The Origin of Disease”. “An American Sickness” explains what is wrong with the business of medicine; and “The Origin of Disease” offers a new vision to explain chronic disease. Patient awareness and education can sometimes bring about needed change.
