Strep infection can lead to PANDAS

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

PANDAS is an acronym for a sudden onset mental disorder in children, which develops after an acute strep infection. Children may develop sudden onset obsessions, compulsions, OCD, anxiety, lability, motor or vocal tics, enuresis, deterioration in handwriting, etc. It is reasonable to believe adults can also get acute strep, and similarly develop PANDAS, although little research has been done on adults with problem behaviors or a mental health diagnosis. Strep has as many as 75 variants, some more virulent than…..

UTD vaccinations may provide some cross-protection to covid19

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Research from Johns Hopkins University provides further evidence vaccines can provide some cross-protection against covid19. Patients who received the BCG vaccine had cross-protection against covid19; and the MMR and polio vaccines have also been shown to provide some cross-protection.   The vaccination status of seriously ill covid19 patients, patients who contracted covid19 and did not become seriously ill, and patients who did not contract covid19, is important in understanding covid19. The vaccination status of pediatric patients too young for the…..

Mental illness is a medical illness

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Re-post from 2/15/19 Mental illness is a medical illness! A second patient with leukemia, who had no mental illness, received a bone marrow transplant from a schizophrenic brother, and the patient developed schizophrenia. In a third scenario, a…..

Toxoplasmosis from cats can cause physical and mental illness decades after an acute infection

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Many scientists over the years have found an association between cat ownership as a child and chronic diseases as an adult. Scientific findings have been inconsistent, in part because the studies do not consider critical factors such as if and when toxoplasmosis was acquired by a child. The risk of toxoplasmosis transmission to humans is greatest shortly after the cat/kitten acquires toxoplasmosis; in feral cats; when litter boxes are used indoors; and when litter boxes are not cleaned daily. Kittens…..

Let there be light arising from medical divides

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

These are two amazing photos of lightening striking the Rio Grande Gorge, by Klaus Priebe and Elijah Rael.   Let there be light rising from the great divides in medicine, closing the many divides in medicine and seeking new ideas about the causes of chronic disease.
