Aging may be adversely impacted by an infectious burden

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Studies have linked higher levels of TNF-alpha and Interleukin-6 in the elderly to faster aging and higher mortality, independent of other lifestyle risk factors (smoking, diet and exercise). Plasma levels of TNF-alpha correlated with levels of IL-6 and C-reactive protein. The study indirectly supports chronic chlamydia infection accelerates aging, because chlamydia generates TNF-alpha, IL-6, and C-reactive protein. Community acquired chlamydia pneumonia, sexually acquired chlamydia, and chlamydia acquired from birds, are difficult for the immune system to eradicate, which causes the…..

Co-morbid chronic diseases may have a common root cause

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Cardiac disease, macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s are common co-morbid conditions. The reason these co-morbidities occur is because each arises from a common root cause—chronic chlamydia pneumonia (CP). CP damages the endothelium inside blood vessels and at the blood brain barrier, and causes the build-up of plaque and narrowing of vessels. CP also causes angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) and many other adverse effects.   CP can impair cardiac function by damaging endothelium inside blood vessels, and depositing plaque…..

Wisdom of the ages revisited!

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Today we offer the following quotes, which highlight some of the impediments to change in the medical system. The quotes may apply to doctor or patient. We hope our book and our efforts on social media assist in finding new scientific truths, even though we recognize change can take a long time. 1. “Most people don’t want accurate information, they want validating information. Growth requires you to be open to unlearning ideas that previously served you.” (James Clear) 2. “A…..

Pets and other animals can be a vector for transmission and for generating viral variants

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

Dogs and cats can be infected with covid19. Covid can pass from person-to-animal, and animal-to-animal; in the animals the virus can change; and then the animals can pass the same or modified forms of the pathogen back to people. During the Spanish flu pandemic, humans infected pigs with H1N1; and many decades later pigs infected humans with a similar but modified form of the H1N1 influenza virus. Pets and animals in the household and/or in close contact with people can…..

Acute influenza can increase the risk of Parkinson’s developing 10-15 years later

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

The study reports Parkinson’s Disease occurring 10-15 years after an influenza infection. The study supports getting flu shots annually, which may also be cross-protective to some extent against Covid-19. The second important finding confirms chronic disease can develop decades after acute infection. Finally, the study raised the issue of the overall infectious burden caused by multiple chronic infections. We must start identifying the most dangerous acute infections early, including influenza, intracellular pathogens, and parasites; and offer treatments that are available…..

The long view in NM has inspired for thousands of years

Carolyn Merchant Blog 0 0

The Rio Grande Gorge and Rio Grande Gorge Bridge are on the cover of our book, as symbolic of the great divides in medicine. The first picture attached shows a storm over the gorge—the great divide—and the second picture is the highest point in NM (Wheeler Peak) looking toward the Sandia Mountains, in Albuquerque, 150 miles away. NM is truly the home of the long view and the big sky, which have inspired many artists and thinkers over thousands of…..
